I'm looking for an indoor trainer for this winter (yes, I'm too much of a wuss to face the freezing cold San Angelo wind). I'm ovewhelmed by all the information about trainers: rollers, turbo, magnetic, fan... I even saw a guy riding his bike on a treadmill. If you have an indoor trainer and can offer me advice I would appreciate it!
Desired Qualities: Relatively quiet Easy to assemble Provides good resistance, realistic feel Moderately priced (~$300)
Thanks! j

Jeanette, I prefer rollers. But for starters you should try a trainer. I have a Trek trainer you can borrow and if you like it I'll sell it to you cheap. Jeanette-
Give cyclocross racing a try and you'll start looking forward to cold, wet, muddy days on the bike! All joking aside, I've done indoor wind trainer workouts for years, and they are extremely effective if you can get past the "going nowhere" aspect. Trainers are great for recovery rides, interval sessions, tempo repeats, and cold weather brick workouts. I would suggest staying away from rollers - resistance trainers are more stable and enable you to do the hard, high heart rate workouts. A few suggestions:
* Buy a big floor fan in addition to the trainer - you will quickly overheat when going hard indoors, so you need the fan. * Position the trainer in front of a TV or crank up the tunes on your IPod ... stationary biking can get boring without some diversion. * Use the trainer for easy recovery rides or for the hard interval sessions. Trying to do long 2-3 hour endurance stuff on a stationary bike will send you to the psyc ward. * Be creative with workouts (example: watch a sporting event on TV while riding, and accelerate to a really hard pace during each commercial). * Combine workouts ... for example, do a 45 minute tempo ride on the trainer, transition to a 30 minute outdoor run, and then get back on the trainer for a 15 minute cool down ride.
As for equipment, the simple magnetic trainers work just fine. Here's a good basic model (http://www.nashbar.com/profile.cfm?category=6000123&subcategory=60001087&brand=&sku=23262&storetype=&estoreid=&pagename=Shop%20by%20Subcat%3A%20Trainers%20and%20Rollers).

I think I am going to get rollers this winter but havent decided. I know Kevin B. has a trainer with some sort of fan that is so loud it makes you want to take it outside in the cold just to get away from it. I have been told that fluid is the best but I am also confused.

WELL THE BEST THING TO DO IS GO WITH SOMETHING OUTDOORS, BUT SINCE YOU AGAINST FREEZING WEATHER I WOULD SAY ROLLERS. YOU CAN NOT BEAT OUTDOOR TRAINING . IF YOU HAVE DO IT JUST GO WITH A FLUID TRAINER AND DO A ANAEROBIC TRAINING LIKE STAIR MASTER OR JOGGING. BILL IS THE BEST OPTION IF YOU WANT TO IMPROVE YOUR TIMES.
